Letter for publication – Brown Not Even Supported By The Labour Party

Sir

The latest battle in the ongoing civil war within the Labour Party has once again laid bare the division and bitterness at the top of the Government.

This time, two very senior former Labour Cabinet Ministers - one a former Chief Whip - called for a secret ballot on Gordon Brown's leadership just months before a General Election.

That in itself was not a surprise.

What was most damaging to Brown was the lukewarm support from his own Cabinet colleagues - some taking up to six hours to decide whether or not to support him. David Milliband actually didn't - he put out a bizarre statement that didn't mention Brown at all but simply said he supported the re-election of the Labour Party.

This in-fighting and manoeuvring at the top of a dying Government is deeply damaging to the UK. We are the last major country in the world to still languish in recession. People are still losing their jobs and struggling to pay their mortgages - yet these Labour Ministers prefer to spend their time jostling for position within their own Party rather than sorting out the record levels of Government debt that Brown has saddled us all with.

The truth is, the country cannot take much more of this Prime Minister or this Government. He was never elected in the first place, and they have lost the moral authority to govern.

They should do the whole country a favour, and call a General Election immediately.

Let the people decide.

Kind regards
