Dan Byles - Budget is 'Dishonest and Dangerous'. It’s Official. Labour Have Bankrupted Britain

Former Army Major and prospective MP Dan Byles, who holds a degree in Economics, today blasted Alistair Darling and Gordon Brown for bankrupting Britain – and for failing to explain how they will pay off the country’s crippling debts. 

Dan Byles has been leading high profile campaigns in North Warwickshire and Bedworth against police red tape, post office closures and hospital bed cuts. But today he put his ‘economist hat’ on and delivered a withering criticism of Brown and Darling’s stewardship of the economy.

Dan said: “This week, the Chancellor stood up and laid bare the dire state of the country’s finances. It is almost impossible to grasp the scale of the financial disaster we are facing. In the next two years alone, he will borrow more money than all previous Governments put together since the Bank of England was founded in 1694.

“It cost us less to defeat Hitler, the Kaiser and Napolean than it will to recover from Gordon Brown’s decade in charge of the nation’s credit card.

“What is truly dishonest is the complete lack of an explanation for how this colossal sum is to be paid back. Darling has tinkered around the edges with a few gimmicks, he has thrown some red meat to his backbenchers with a tax hike on ‘the rich’, but there is a vast black hole at the heart of his figures.

“His own forecasts say he will borrow an eye-watering £700 billion over the next four years alone. Independent forecasts suggest this will be closer to £1 trillion. All of that money will have to be paid back, but Darling and Brown haven’t told us how.

“One way or another that hole will have to be filled, and once again it looks like it will fall to the Conservatives to rebuild the public finances after a Labour Government has trashed them.

“The budget this week has finally laid bare the con that has been Gordon Brown’s economic record. The whole thing has been based on a house of cards; a bubble; a giant pyramid scheme of debt giving the illusion of growth.

“Thanks to New Labour’s voodoo economics, the ordinary people of Britain can now look forward to at least decade of high taxes and difficult spending decisions. And every one of those difficult decisions will have one name stamped on them in bright red ink. GORDON BROWN.

“Unemployment locally in North Warwickshire has already risen by more than 150% in the last 12 months. It can’t go on. The honest truth is, the country cannot afford another year of this nonsense. We need a fresh start. A new broom. We need a General Election. Now.”
