Residents of Bedworth are still finding their way around a new £27m Tesco that was opened before Christmas by the town’s MP, Dan Byles. While some shoppers may be aware that the investment has created 150 new jobs and safeguarded 180 or so existing jobs, they may not be aware of an additional donation by Tesco to mark their commitment to the town.

Last week could be considered the final week of what journalists sometimes call the "silly season". Over the Christmas and New Year period, with Parliament in recess and many journalists away from their desks, real news can be a bit thin on the ground. Perhaps that might explain the frenzy of media coverage for two recent 'Twitter rows'.

Bedworth's MP, Dan Byles, was guest of honour and cut the ribbon to officially open Bedworth's new Tesco supermarket.

The new store represents almost £30 million investment by Tesco and replaces a 1970's supermarket operated by the company on the same site. The new store is expected to provide a boost in trade to the town and bring a bonus of around 160 new jobs.

Regular readers will know that I am passionate about improving Bedworth Town Centre. It is no secret that Bedworth has been the badly neglected cousin to Nuneaton for many years – decades even. It is also no secret that I have been critical of the council for failing to be bold and imaginative in seeking to regenerate Bedworth Town Centre. We have ten councilors representing Bedworth on Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council but, with the exception of a small handful who do work hard, too many of them are simply invisible.
